After years of speculation, delays and questions from North Phoenix residents, the Fire ’N’ Ice Arena continues to take shape—but the biggest question remains: When will it open?

I had the opportunity to tour the facility with Troy Mick, Executive Director and Hockey Director for Fire ’N’ Ice Arena. The plans extend well beyond an ice rink, with sports courts, entertainment space, fitness and wellness amenities, restaurants and an adjacent hotel.

The facility previously announced a September 1, 2026 grand-opening target. That date has passed, and as of October 7, no new opening date has been announced.

What Is Fire 'N' Ice Arena?

Fire ’N’ Ice is a planned 250,000-square-foot sports, entertainment, dining and wellness complex at 2727 W. Bronco Butte Trail in North Phoenix.

According to the official facility website, plans include:

• Two full-size NHL ice rinks and a synthetic training rink
• Five multi-sport courts
• A flexible arena with seating for approximately 2,500 people
• Sports training and academy programs
• A fitness center and wellness services
• Restaurants and a sports bar
• An adjacent hotel

A Major New Amenity for North Phoenix

One of the most exciting aspects of the project is its location.

For years, most large sports facilities have been concentrated in Scottsdale, Tempe, and the East Valley.

As North Phoenix continues to grow with new housing developments, TSMC's expansion, and thousands of new residents moving into the area, projects like this help transform the community into a true live-work-play destination.

One surprising fact shared during the tour:

Arizona is now the fifth-fastest-growing market in the United States for USA Hockey registrations.

Many people still associate hockey with colder climates, but Arizona has become a major hockey development hub.

The facility plans to support:

• Youth hockey programs

• Junior hockey teams

• Figure skating

• Learn-to-skate programs

• Hockey academies

• Elite player development

The goal is to create opportunities for Arizona athletes to continue developing without needing to leave the state.

The Technology Inside Fire 'N' Ice

One feature that immediately stood out during our conversation was the arena's focus on technology.

The facility expects to feature:

• AI-powered Zambonis

• Bluetooth-enabled locker rooms

• Advanced video replay systems

According to arena leadership, Fire 'N' Ice may become one of the most technologically advanced sports facilities in Arizona.
