On the East Coast, they might call it a mudroom. Here in Arizona, I’m calling it a desert room.

Yes, I just made that up.

But when my clients showed me how they use this oversized laundry room at 2122 W Rowel Road in Union Park at Norterra, the name seemed to fit.

What Is a Desert Room?

This space is positioned near the entrance from outside, making it a convenient place to handle everything that does not need to follow you into the main living areas.

My clients turned it into a hardworking drop zone with:

• Laundry and a utility sink
• Storage for shoes and everyday essentials
• A designated downstairs baby-changing station
• Plenty of room to keep daily clutter contained

Instead of carrying shoes, laundry and baby supplies throughout the house, everything has a designated place away from the main living spaces.

It may not be an official real estate term yet, but “desert room” has a nice ring to it.
