What is the CAP Canal?

The Central Arizona Project (CAP) is one of the most important water delivery systems in the entire state of Arizona.

It’s a massive canal system that brings Colorado River water to Central and Southern Arizona, including the Phoenix metro area supporting:

  • cities and communities

  • agriculture

  • business development

  • and the long-term water needs of millions of Arizona residents

In other words… it’s a big deal.

And in North Phoenix, the CAP Canal runs through multiple key areas, including near major roads and neighborhoods many of us drive by regularly.

Why is there construction near 7th Street?

The project you’re seeing near 7th Street and the CAP Canal is part of ongoing improvements and maintenance efforts designed to keep the canal system operating reliably and safely.

Like any major infrastructure system, the CAP Canal requires periodic upgrades, repairs, and modernization  and those improvements are especially important in Arizona, where water infrastructure matters in a major way.

Depending on the exact section being worked on, these projects can include:

  • repairs or reinforcement of canal structures

  • updates to canal crossings or bridges

  • safety improvements

  • modernizing systems that help move and manage water efficiently

Even when it looks like “just construction,” what’s happening behind the scenes is really about long-term function and reliability.

Why this project matters for North Phoenix

This is more than just a construction site,  it’s a reminder of how important infrastructure is to our community.

Here’s why this type of project matters:

✅ 1) Long-term reliability

Arizona depends on strong water infrastructure. Upgrades and improvements help protect the system that supports growth and daily life.

✅ 2) Safety + maintenance

Many canal improvements are preventative — meaning they’re designed to strengthen and maintain structures before bigger issues ever arise.

✅ 3) Supporting future growth

North Phoenix continues to expand. As neighborhoods grow and new developments come in, maintaining essential infrastructure becomes even more important.

✅ 4) Local impact

Even if you don’t live directly next to this area, it can affect daily routines like traffic flow on nearby roads, access points, or trail use (depending on where the work is happening).

What you might notice while this is underway

If you’re driving through the area frequently, you may see:

  • increased construction traffic

  • equipment and staging areas

  • fencing or restricted areas

  • temporary closures or changes along nearby canal paths/trails

Typically, projects like this are done in phases, and the visible work will shift as different parts of the project are completed.

What homeowners and future buyers should know

Whenever there’s visible construction in a community, people naturally ask if it’s something to be concerned about.

In this case, canal projects like this are usually a positive, — it’s infrastructure investment and long-term improvement, not something that should raise red flags.

If you live nearby, it’s always smart to:

  • stay aware of project updates

  • know whether any access points or trails are temporarily affected

  • and understand what improvements are being made (especially if you’re considering buying or selling near the canal)
